Stakeholders Applaud ODCHC’s Five-year Achievements

Stakeholders in Ondo State have commended the efforts of the Ondo State Contributory Health Ondo State Contributory Health Commission ( ODCHC) in its five years of establishment.

They made the commendation yesterday during a press conference on the Ondo State Contributory Health Scheme update in Akure.

Those who spoke included the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Banji Awolowo Ajaka; SA on Health, Prof. Simidele Odimayo; representative of the Head of Service and Permanent Secretary, Office of Establishment, Mrs. Dare Atunse; Commissioner for Information, Hon. Wale Akinlosotu; and Chairman, House Committee on Health, Dr. Christopher Ogunlana, among others.

They commended the Director-General of the Commission, Dr. Abiodun Oyeneyin, for his doggedness, dedication, diligence, and commitment to duty.

They expressed satisfaction with the government’s resolve to make health accessible to residents through the implementation of the health insurance scheme for residents of the state.

Commissioner for health, Dr. Banji Awolowo Ajaka, who stated that the operationalization of the scheme began about one and a half years ago, noted that enrollees of ORANGHIS are enjoying the scheme, assuring the commencement of the insurance scheme for the informal sector in no distant time.

While noting that the Commission has achieved over 5 percent coverage, he described health insurance as the way to go, assuring the inclusion of more residents into the scheme.

According to SA on health, Prof. Odimayo, he commended the Governor, Hon. Lucky Orimisan Ayedatiwa, for his leadership style, especially the regular payment of salaries and hazard allowances for health workers, as well as the encouragement of developmental activities in health facilities across the state.

Commissioner for Information, Hon. Wale Akinlosotu, while giving kudos to the Commission for the success recorded so far, stressed the need for it not to rest on its oars to bring more residents on board.

Chairman, House Committee on health, Dr. Christopher Ogunlana, noted that the Commission has gone a long way in improving the health status of residents, noting that with the scheme in place, residents have been benefiting from qualitative health services in the state.

He urged the Commission to do more in covering more residents, especially those at the grassroots.

Representative of the Head of Service, Mrs. Dare Atunse, commended the Commission for ensuring that residents enjoy qualitative health care delivery.

She congratulated the state government for putting the scheme in place and also for the political will to support it.

While commending health workers, she called on them to live up to expectations in discharging their duties, assuring the government’s resolve to continue to give adequate support to the health sector.

Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Health, Dr. Adeniran Ikuomola, stated that the provision and availability of financial resources to cater for health have been sorted out with the scheme, urging all to key into the system to eradicate the financial burden of accessing health care.

Permanent Secretary, Ondo State Hospitals’ Management Board, Dr. Ayodele Adiji, pledged the board’s loyalty to the Commission in achieving more feats.

Representative of the State Coordinator, World Health Organization (WHO), Mrs. Modupe Dosunmu, commended the state government for the initiative, noting that health care financing is key to the health system of any country, which, according to her, cannot be ignored.

State Coordinator, National Health Insurance Agency (NHIA), Dr. Adebiyi, stated that the state has done well in its drive towards achieving universal health coverage (UHC), adding that the organization will continue to support the state in achieving the goal of guaranteeing all citizens of Nigeria qualitative health care.

He stressed the need for stakeholders to create more awareness for the scheme.

Chairman, Trade Union Congress (TUC), Com. Clement Fatuase, stressed the need to tackle the challenges confronting the scheme, especially ORANGHIS, in order for workers to get value for their contributions.

In his welcome address, SA on Health, Prof. Simidele Odimayo, noted that the Commission has done a lot.

Director-General, Ondo State Contributory Health Commission (ODCHC), Dr. Abiodun Oyeneyin, in his remarks, revealed that the Abiyamo scheme has recorded over 45,220 beneficiaries since December 2019, with 14,759 babies delivered. He added that the Basic Health Care Provision Fund Programme (BHCPFP ‘Ilera Loro’ scheme) has enrolled 50,503 vulnerable individuals, including widows, the elderly, people with disabilities, women of reproductive age, and children under five.

Commending stakeholders for their support for the Orange Health Insurance Scheme (ORANGHIS), he mentioned that the scheme has 97,738 enrollees (public servants and their dependents) who, according to him, have been accessing care in their chosen health facilities.

While noting that the Commission is working towards surmounting its challenges, he stressed the need for health care providers to make both treatment and drugs available to enrollees to prevent sanctions.

Oyeneyin noted that the health care landscape of the state has changed with the commencement of the state contributory health scheme, adding that a monitoring committee for ORANGHIS will be put in place for the proper implementation of the scheme.
